What is the purpose of your travel to Portugal? What is this project all about? What is the role of Fayoum University? These all were questions that need to be answered to the board of the Department of Agricultural Economics of Fayoum University after my trip to the Agriculture ToT in Portugal. The answer simply came through placing an EduCamp Seminar as part of the weekly seminar program of the department. The seminar was held during the second week of October 2012. Attendees of the seminar included but were not limited to staff members, postgraduate students, and undergraduate students.

Within the framework of Education for Sustainable Development Beyond the Campus (EduCamp) Project,  the Center for Special Studies and Programs, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, in collaboration with Wadi Environmental Science Centre (WESC) and Alexandria University is organizing two-day workshop entitled “Explore SD World: Introducing Sustainable Development Concepts”, in Bibliotheca Alexandrina,  Conference Center,  from 25 to 26 November 2012.

Within the framework of the Nile River Awareness Campaign, Cairo University EduCamp team has organized a visit to the schools in the region, namely Giza. The visit targeted schools in slum areas near the Nile River to conduct a questionnaire on the awareness of students from grades 5-9 regarding the use of the Nile River. A group of professors and volunteering students visited the school and organized activities for the students under the Nile River theme.


EduCamp at Cairo University International Scientific Forum

Within the activities of Cairo University International Scientific Forum 2012 focusing on Africa and Nile Basin countres, EduCamp team will be organizing the Nile River Awareness Campaign in collaboration with the Community Service Sector at the University. The Campaign will include outdoor activities where school students from the region of Giza will be received by groups of university professors and volunteering university students in the campus. The school pupils will spend a day in the campus doing activities related to Sustainable Development focusing on the use of Nile River. Besides, a 2-hours session will be held within the proceeding of the Forum where EduCamp representatives together with specialists in Nile River Water will give talks on the topic. The Scientific Forum is held from 11th-13th December 2012 and the Nile River Awareness Campaign is scheduled for the 12th of December.

EduCamp: Water Training 21st January 2013

The seventh training of trainers’ workshop in a series of 9 ToT modules will be held from the 21st to the 25th January 2013, the training will be hosted at RWTH Aachen, Germany.

First Center of Excellence established

Cairo University has the pleasure to announce the establishment of the Unit of Excellence for Education for Sustainable Development within the structure of the University Community Service Centre. The establishment of the ESD unit has been presented to the Community Service Management Board and it was approved through a modification to the Centre’s bylaw. The modification included adding the new ESD unit with its legal framework, its organizational structure and its financial framework. The new bylaw was revised by the university legal consultants and it was finally approve by the University Council last September to be the first ESD unit in the Egyptian universities, partner in the EduCamp Project.

EduCamp won an RCE Recognition Award at the 7th Global RCE Conference in Korea

During the 7th Global RCE (Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development) Conference, which took place at the city of Tongyeong, Korea, the first RCE Recognition Awards were conferred by the Global RCE Service Centre of the United Nations University, Institute of Advanced Studies. The RCE Award recognizes good practices in education for sustainable development that have ‘translated existing local knowledge into concrete sustainability change practices, and empowered individuals and communities to make sustainable choices for the future. The nominated projects provided evidence of involvement of diverse actors in addressing local sustainable development challenges through dialogue, education, research and multi-stakeholder learning’ (UNU-IAS, 2012).
