Education for Sustainable Development beyond the Campus (EduCamp) Closing event and hand over of the ESD Resource Kits to the Minister of Education
Creating consciousness among school children for sustainable development. Providing them with practical and fun learning experiences that go beyond the text book. Connecting schools and universities for joint efforts for the education of Egyptian children. This is what the EduCamp consortium worked for in the past three and a half years.
The main objective of the project was to promote and implement ESD in Egypt nationwide and within all education levels. The consortium members of this project included Egyptian and European universities, NGOs, and international organizations.
Among the achievements of the project are:
- Development of ESD resource kits for schools to provide activities for teachers and students that link directly to the existing school curriculum.
- Development of a School Teachers’ Training Programme (STTP) to enable teachers to implement ESD and use the kits in their teaching activities.
- Establishment of seven Centres of Excellence hosted by seven Egyptian Universities (Cairo, Zagazig, Fayoum, Alexandria, Suez Canal, The American University in Cairo and Heliopolis University). They aim to promote and support the introduction of ESD into the education system, provide teachers’ training programs and consultancy services.
The closing conference of the project will bring together project partners, professors, teachers, educators and interested public. During the conference the ESD resource kits will be presented and officially handed over to the Minister of Education Dr. Mahmoud Abo El-Nasr.
I attended four trainings of the EduCamp training of Trainers Module (Our World, Biodiversity, Agriculture and Implementation Training 1). The trainings were an intensive and enriching experience and have changed my outlook to many problems that Egypt faces. As a teacher of English literature, I felt that my role is greater to disseminate the culture of sustainable development among my students not only the school teachers I am going to communicate.
Heliopolis University (HU) Center of Excellence has completed the pilot implementation training programme, which took place from Sunday August 25th to Thursday August 29th, 2013. It started at 9am and continued for five days till 4pm. The teachers being trained were from Al-Fath Experimental School at Belbeis. The pilot programme covered the fields of Energy, Water, Biodiversity, Agriculture, and Our World. The aim of the training program is train the school teachers on how to infuse Sustainable Development (SD) concepts into the current school curricula through stimulating activities and other educational games. The EduCamp logic is to prepare the future generation on green thinking and preserving our natural resources.
The Project Educamp aims to promote the Education for Sustainable development in the Egyptian society and brings Universities and schools together in a structured mechanism. To that end seven centers of excellence have been established, which provide teacher training on the use of the developed ESD-Kits for grades 5 to 9 and which are hosting a virtual environment for sharing knowledge to be reached online from everywhere and every time in Egypt.
The pilot implementation (PI) took place at the Centre of Excellence, Alexandria University (CESDAU) which is located in Faculty of Education (FOE). FOE is not far from the downtown area of Alexandria University in Egypt; therefore it draws students from all parts of the city. Moreover, a partnership was established between FOE, Ministry of Education (MOE) and other institutions working in the field of education and professional development. The current PI can be considered part of this partnership. Eighteen teachers from the Talaat Harb School, teaching different subject matters, participated in the PI which aimed to cover main principles of the sustainable development including its aims and objectives, methodologies, and history. Moreover, the PI tried to enhance teachers’ understanding of sustainable development and its political, economic, cultural, social, and environmental dimensions.
From Sunday September 1st to Thursday September 5th, the American University in Cairo (AUC) pilot implementation was held for 5-days from 9am to 3pm. The event was organized under the auspices of the American University in Cairo-Center for Sustainable Development-Unit of Excellence for Education for Sustainable Development. During the pilot implementation, the professors that have participated in the EduCamp Training of Trainers Module trained teachers from an experimental school in the vicinity of AUC. The training consisted a number of sessions addressing Sustainable Development from the different perspectives: Our world, biodiversity, agriculture, energy, and water.
